Can there be two queens? Female rappers in the industry..

Remy was out of prison all of one day after serving a six year bid when she dropped her long awaited first song post incarceration. It came in the form of a DJ Khaled “They don’t love you no more” remix. While I can say I enjoyed the song, classic Remy spitting bars and possibly taking shots (as she always has), it was met with mixed reviews. Then to top it off an hour or so after the song dropped the Beyonce & Nicki Minaj “Flawless” remix dropped, again shots possibly being taken, coincidence?

I am not going to make this a Remy Ma vs Nicki thing because it is bigger than that.  Something was brought to my attention, Raine (@bosschickraine) of “Battle Talk Radio” (weds 10pm-12 www.damatrixstudios.com) was debating the state of the female rapper in game today. When do you last remember more than one female rapper being prominent at the same time?

Over the last ten years or so it seems there is only room for one female rapper to reign supreme. When Remy Ma was starting to get her name out there she unfortunately went to prison since then we have seen the signing and emergence of Nicki Minaj who has held the top spot since. During this time when any other female rapper has started to gain attention there are automatic comparisons, which lead to these so called “beefs”. Honestly outside of Iggy Azalea, Azealia Banks, and the attempted mainstream comeback of lil kim, who have you even heard or seen much from in the last ten years?

Ten years ago we had Lil Kims “The Naked Truth” (I liked, but mixed reviews), Eve was m.i.a. (she dropped an album in 2013 tho apparently I missed that). Missy gave us “The Cookbook” and we have missed her since, but I will not include her in this debate as she is far more than just a rapper musically. Foxy had “Brooklyn Don Diva” in 2008, right around the time Remy Ma was being sentenced and Nicki was starting to bud, but that was a flop.

So, in the 90’s and maybe… maybe early 2000’s, we would have a few female rappers getting the same amount of exposure and air play at the same time. Since then it was Lil Kim for the early 2000’s (Eve and Foxy were still around but Kim was the popular one, think Iggy to Nicki), then Remy came and it looked like she was about to be the new “It girl” for rap even with Nicki making noise till… boom 8 year sentence. (only 6 served) Nicki got signed five years ago and has stormed the industry since.

This is not to say that she is the ONLY female rapper but for some reason she is the only one that has flourished. It is in no way because she is the only one with talent there are plenty of other female rappers with the same, if not more, talent. She can’t be the only one with enough drive and dedication to succeed. The prettiest? The sexiest? The most marketable? Or… is it that the industry allows one female to have all the glory JUST so induce competition? Further separating women in reality as they adapt to try and achieve that top spot feeding into the stereotypes of women being catty.

Ahh, the entertainment industry and the images they project on us. The subliminal conditioning is ridiculous. Then we wonder where these “all my friends are dudes because females are drama” girls come from. Or why everyone walks around in the same styles because their faves dress a certain way. Like I said it is bigger than a Remy Ma vs Nicki thing, it’s about the messages being portrayed by the puppeteers pulling the strings embedding a hate for one another based out of constant competition. Keeping up with the Jonses.

So before you try to tear one female rapper down simply because your jaded by your adoration for another female rapper, answer me WHY they can’t co-exist in success?

I mean I don’t like country music (or Nicki really) but I’d never discredit their talent, skills, or achievements.
